Leeds City Council’s Community Committee Supports Filipino Cultural Arts Workshops in Leeds

Much-Needed Community Support

Creative Hearts United received funding from the Leeds City Council’s Community Committee. The organisation is delivering the Philippine Cultural Arts Workshops in summer 2026. The programme supports the local Filipino community in Leeds.

About the Committee

The Inner and Outer East Leeds Community Committee operates within Leeds City Council. Local ward councillors collaborate with residents and organisations to improve community well-being. The committee funds projects that promote inclusion, diversity, and neighbourhood connections.

Community Engagement

The funding supports performing arts engagement for the Filipino diaspora in the area. Participants include NHS workers, carers, homemakers, and students. They maintain their heritage while embracing British culture.

Every now and then, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we get the chance to rehearse in a proper studio — and it makes all the difference.
With funding support, our workshops can happen in a real studio space, and the impact is unmistakable. Photo taken from our 2025 dress rehearsal.

Workshop Activities

This year’s workshops feature Karatong, Bulaklakan, and Subli. YFG members join as participants. They engage in performances, crafts, and cultural learning. Atleast 20 participants have signed up to form the Yorkshire Filipino Group (YFG) Cultural Dance Troupe.

Funding and Impact

The funding covers equipment hire, costumes, props, materials, transport, and venue costs, and it also supports our cultural event where participants perform for the public. This investment ensures an accessible, art, cultural and recreational programme for the Filipino communities in Burmantofts and Richmond Hill, Gipton and Harehills, Killingbeck and Seacroft, and Temple Newsam.

Cherry Mullins, Costume Director and Board of Trustee at Creative Hearts United, said:

“We are truly grateful for this support, which empowers us to celebrate Filipino culture while creating meaningful opportunities for people to come together through creativity, learning, and shared experiences. We also extend our special thanks to Luke Farley, and his colleagues, Ashgar Khan and Nkele Manaka, Leeds City councillor of Burmantofts and Richmond Hill ward, for their leadership and continued support.”
