Cultural Dance Workshop This Summer

The YFG Cultural Dance Troupe will be showcasing three traditional Filipino folk dances through this summer workshops, namely the Karatong, Bulaklakan, and Subli. Creative Hearts United will facilitate the workshop and guide participants throughout the programme.

Karatong comes from Cuyo, Palawan in the MIMAROPA region (Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan). The dance celebrates community spirit and harvest festivals. Dancers perform to the rhythm of bamboo drums known as karatong.

The performance will also feature bunga mangga props, a central pole with radiating branches that represent mango blossoms. These elements highlight the Philippines’ rich agricultural heritage while symbolising abundance, growth, and the harvest season.

Bulaklakan comes from Bulacan in Central Luzon. The dance uses floral props and graceful movements. It reflects beauty, courtship, and celebration through flower-inspired choreography.

Subli from Southern Luzon

Subli originates from Batangas in Southern Luzon. The dance honours the Santo Niño and expresses deep devotion. Men have bamboo castanets while women perform using their hats.
