On 12 June 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite, raising the national flag for the first time and playing “Lupang Hinirang”, the national anthem. However, the country later fell under American and Japanese rule before finally achieving full independence on 4 July 1946—though 12 June was officially recognised as the country’s Independence Day starting in 1962.

The day is a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of Filipinos in their fight for freedom. It continues to inspire patriotism, unity, and the pursuit of a better future.
